Whether you’re spending the day by the pool with your friends, exploring a new city or heading out on a first date, a cute clutch is the way to go. Dressed up or dressed down the unique, handmade clutch is this season’s big hit. Gone are the days of ‘All Black Everything’ and instead women all over the world are sporting outfits matched with bursts of colour and psychedelic patterns.
I turned 30 years old in the mischievous city of Amsterdam, and that was 5 years before a guy named Wichai and his beautiful hill tribe handbags created the vision for Ethnic Lanna and therefore changed my life.. now as I think of the posible destinations for celebrating my 40th year of life (India, Bali, Northern Vietnam) I decided to come and explore literally my back yard, the off the beaten path hill tribes of Northern Laos. So my girlfriend Ning and I strapped on the backpacks and headed East on a bus from Chiang Mai to the border of Thailand-Laos, headed to the city of Chiang Khong. Our bus had the heading of "Chiang Khong" posted on the outside with a large sign, so everything was good right? well, nothing is set in stone in Thailand, even when traveling with a Thai..
Chiang Mai is the cultural capital of Thailand and one of the best places to visit if you love local markets and shopping. Ethnic Lanna was started as a direct result of our owner, Carlos Mantilla, falling completely in love with the handbags, jewelry, and apparel available at the markets.
These markets are not only great places to shop and pass the time, but where we often go to find inspiration. We've met so many great people and have made so many connections with the artisans at these markets, and we hope you feel the same way if you ever make your way to Chiang Mai.
Get in touch if you want a guide, as we love to share our knowledge and experience with anyone who shares our passion!
We've recently been asked by customers about how are bags are constructed and if they really are all handmade. We pride ourselves in the amount of time and care each bag we make is given, and they are indeed all lovingly hand crafted.
So with the help of La, our Burmese Artisan, we put together a quick little video on how we make one of our best selling bags. We hope you appreciate the insight, and if you have any questions, or would like to order this bag, please don't hesitate to get in touch!
